FEMA Updates Monterey County Flood Maps – The King City Rustler

SALINAS VALLEY – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided preliminary flood maps for parts of Monterey County, including the Salinas Valley.

The maps identify revised flood hazards along the Salinas River, Gonzales Slough, Natividad Creek and unnamed tributaries. These new maps will help building managers, floodplain administrators, developers and owners make effective mitigation decisions, contributing to safer and more disaster-resilient communities.

Prior to the new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) taking effect, there is a 90-day appeal period from May 12 to August 10. During this period, government agencies, residents, or businesses with supporting technical and scientific information, such as detailed hydraulic information or hydrological data, may appeal the flood hazard information on the maps. preliminary, which can be viewed at fema.gov/preliminaryfloodhazarddata.

Flood risks are dynamic and change frequently for many reasons, including weather, erosion, and community development.

Officials from FEMA, Monterey County, and the communities of Salinas, Soledad, Chualar, and Gonzales worked together to provide updated information that accurately reflects flood risk. These changes may also affect future building standards or insurance requirements.

The local mapping project is part of a nationwide effort led by FEMA to increase local knowledge of flood risk and support actions to address and reduce the effects of flooding on new and improved structures.

FEMA encourages residents to review the preliminary flood maps to learn more about local flood risk, potential future flood insurance requirements, and to identify any concerns or questions regarding the information provided.

The risk of flooding affects almost every corner of the country. A total of 98% of counties have experienced flooding, making it the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters.
