Overwatch 2 devs reveal how Hanamura and other 2CP maps could return
While Overwatch’s 2CP maps remain some of the most controversial in the game, the development team working on OW2 has revealed that it may return in an all-new mode.
If there’s one thing that has divided the Overwatch community, it’s Assault Maps. Colloquially known as 2CP due to their two different checkpoints, players appealed to Blizzard to remove them from ranked rotation – and remove Paris altogether.
Although these were dropped for the new Push mode in the game’s highly anticipated sequel, Overwatch 2, the developers have long hinted that we might see them return in some form in the next installment’s life cycle. .
One suggestion is to integrate them into an entirely optional game mode – and it seems that’s exactly what Blizzard is planning.
Overwatch 2 devs want to “reuse” 2CP cards
During a Reddit AMA, a player asked “what are your plans for maps that will remain unused once OW2 launches publicly, such as Temple of Anubis and Hanamura? Will they be reused/extended into other existing game modes? ?
“In a similar pace, are there any plans to reinstate and rework maps like Paris or Horizon Lunar Colony to fit the molds of other game modes as well?”
Overwatch 2 Systems Designer, Winter, was quick to respond. “I have a few ideas that I’d like to try when it comes to repurposing them for potential new game modes,” they wrote, noting “these ideas may only see the light of day in the distant future considering our current plans.
“If we found a way to give them a new mode, we would want to do extensive testing in the Arcade or other formats where we can get community feedback. We know how divided Assault (2CP) has been. a large chunk of our player base and we agree there were issues, so we wouldn’t bring these cards back without a lot of testing.
When asked about the Escort version of Hanamura seen in the game’s trailer, they replied “we don’t have a payload version of Hanamura. Converting these maps to a payload would be a huge effort and it’s not is not the one we have undertaken.
“The mode I’d like to prototype for an Onslaught replacement would require some of the tech we’re developing for the PvE side of OW2, but again, that’s just a twinkle in my eye right now.”
So while it looks like we won’t be seeing the return of Paris or Hanamura anytime soon, there are clear plans to try and bring these iconic locations into Overwatch 2.
So keep an eye on the weather on the lunar horizon (get it?) Assault fans; your favorite cards might end up in OW2 after all.
