Thursday’s National Forecast – High pressure sets in (+12 charts) | Weather report


A high pressure area is spreading over New Zealand today, bringing mostly calm weather. We do have some showers however, particularly in Canterbury this morning and then inland from North Canterbury to Marlborough this afternoon, possibly heavy.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay Of Plenty
Morning clouds possible otherwise mostly sunny southwesterly winds. Afternoon sea breeze for Bay Of Plenty and eastern Northland.
Maximums: 20-22

West North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloud in the morning then generally sunny, possibility of an isolated downpour in the late afternoon / evening over a few hills and inland ranges if not mostly dry. Winds west to northwest.
Maximums: 17-20

East of the North Island
Mostly sunny, a few clouds with the risk of a late afternoon / evening downpour, particularly over the hills and ranges in the interior. Light winds tend towards the coast in the afternoon.

Wellington
Mostly sunny with northerly winds.
Maximums: 18-20

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning sun, showers can develop in the afternoon with thunderstorms and hail (mainly for Marlborough, but showers can reach Nelson for some time in the evening). Light winds tend towards the coast in the afternoon.

Canterbury
Clear morning showers (maybe heavy at first for southern Canterbury), clouds change to sunny lightning, but a few isolated showers develop in the afternoon (mostly inland around the foothills ). Showers can become severe with thunderstorms and hail for the interior of North Canterbury. Winds east to northeast.
Maximums: 16-20

Western coast
The morning clouds break into clearings, some showers sometimes possible. Winds from the southwest.
Maximums: 15-18

Southland and Otago
The first showers clear the south of the country, then the sunny periods increase, Otago is mostly sunny, but northern Otago can see a few isolated showers in the afternoon over the hills / ranges then clear in the evening . Winds west, trending out to sea in the afternoon.
